Okay, you probably saw this already, right? That $3.99 lavender tote bag from Trader Joe’s went viral on TikTok and turned into a whole thing.

People were lining up, stores had to set limits, and next thing you know, resale listings were popping up everywhere, like eBay, Etsy, you name it.

So yeah, it looked like just a simple product, but that was not the real story.

The thing is, the bag did not blow up just because it was limited. It blew up because people already cared.

That is the part many business owners don’t notice.

They see scarcity and copy that first. But scarcity on its own is just pressure.

Scarcity works when there is already some kind of pull, identity, or emotional attachment behind the product.

If you think about it for a second, people usually want something for a few common reasons:

  • It feels like them
  • They already have a habit of buying it
  • They see others wanting it
  • Or they want to collect different versions

This tote had more than one of these going for it at the same time. That’s why it worked.

So if you want to apply this properly, here’s what to focus on:

➡️ Build desire before urgency

Do not start with limited stock, countdowns, or low quantity banners.

Start with something people already want to own, share, gift, or talk about. That is what gives scarcity any real power.

Sometimes, a small variation, a new version, a fresh color, a different bundle, can bring attention back if people already like the base product.

➡️ Limits only work when the product feels worth chasing

A two-item limit made people want it more, sure, but only because the bag already felt special to them.

If the product is boring, limits do not create magic. They just make people annoyed.

➡️ Resale can tell you more than your own sales page

When people start flipping an item for more money, it usually means demand is stronger than expected.

In simple words, the market may be telling you that the product has more value than you thought. That does not always mean you should raise prices right away, but it does mean pay attention.

So yes, scarcity only works after people care. Not before.

You do not need a viral tote bag to learn the lesson. You just need to stop leading with urgency before people have a reason to care.
