Everyone’s excited that AI is driving purchases now. People are asking ChatGPT what to buy, and it’s actually recommending products. That part is true. What nobody’s talking about is what happens right after. New research looked at how Gen Z actually shops with AI, and they found that 48% of Gen Z buyers had already purchased something an AI recommended. But 43% had also switched to a different brand specifically because of how a brand used AI. Thing is, we assume younger buyers will tolerate anything brands do with tech. They grew up online, they’re used to it, they’ll just accept it. The data says the opposite. The more used to AI they get, the quicker they catch when it’s used in a way that feels confusing or in your face ways. And they just leave. About 25% said they’d stop sticking with a brand over AI use they didn’t know about. Just, you used AI and kept it quiet, so we’re out. The practical part for anyone starting an online store right now: if you’re using any AI in your product descriptions, recommendations, or chat support, just say so. Even just a single line. “We use AI to help surface products you might like.” That’s it. You don’t need a long policy page, just don’t pretend it isn’t happening. The buyers most likely to find you using AI are the same ones most likely to walk away if they feel tricked by it. The trust part costs nothing. Losing it costs everything. Online business and marketing insights from what's working out there, researched and handed to you every Thursday.
Not my usual Thursday send, but I had to get it out. You know, most people who want to start an online store don’t fail because they picked the wrong product, or ran out of money, or didn’t know enough about marketing. They fail because they waited. And kept waiting. Until waiting became the plan. I’ve watched this happen up close. Yesterday, I had lunch with a few of my old friends. We were just talking about life, how things turned out, and yes, the cost of living, the usual. And at some...
Everyone tells you the same thing when you start a YouTube channel. Go niche. Pick a tiny topic. Build a small, loyal audience. And to be fair, that advice isn’t totally wrong. But YouTube just came out with a culture report and it complicates things a bit. They surveyed 939 people between 14 and 44, and 63% said they watch content or follow creators that everyone they know is also watching. Same as five years ago. The niche explosion happened, sure, but people still want to feel like they’re...
If you sell something men actually care about, whether that’s grooming, outdoor gear, hobby supplies, workwear, Pinterest probably wasn’t even on your radar. And I get it. Pinterest has this reputation. Wedding boards, recipe pins, home decor with too many throw pillows and a candle in every corner. It’s been that way for as long as anyone can remember, so people just keep thinking that. But real life looks different right now, maybe a whole lot. Pinterest just put out their 2026 Men’s Trend...
