It also looks terrible, stuck right in the middle of a patio someone just spent $4,000 renovating. People search “how to hide AC unit outside” and end up with a rabbit hole of ugly $20 plastic covers that somehow look worse than the unit itself. That search, right there, is the business. Here’s the thing. A lot of people hear “sell decorative AC covers” and think it sounds too simple, or too niche, or too weird. I thought the same thing, kind of. But a company called AirDeko, started in Miami by people who looked at peacocks and got inspired (yes, really), built a whole brand around this. Their monthly revenue grew 647% month-over-month. For every dollar they spent on ads, they pulled back $16. That’s not a fluke. The market is there. It’s just that most people haven’t noticed it yet. So what’s the actual idea? You sell something that makes an outdoor AC unit look like it belongs in the yard instead of ruining it. That could be a decorative screen, a wood panel enclosure, a laser-cut metal cover, or a slatted privacy box. The exact form doesn’t matter as much as the outcome, which is: the ugly thing disappears. The pain point is obvious. The buyer is someone who just did a backyard renovation, or moved into a house with a mini-split on the wall, or lives in an HOA that requires units to be screened from public view. They already want this. They just can't find the version they need. Etsy has 750+ listings in this category, and that gap is still open if you go narrower. Farmhouse, coastal, renter-friendly, HOA-compliant, something specific enough that the right buyer feels like it was made for them. How to start this week:
Start cost: $0 for the first week. Just research. And there’s another thing. AC units are not standard sizes. Buyers will message you constantly asking if your cover fits their specific unit. If you build a proper sizing guide upfront and offer custom sizing as a paid option, that frustration becomes your edge instead of your headache. So yeah, the market exists.
